Just looking for some insight if this has happened to any of you.... There was an incident at the LTC that I work PRN at, a patient suffered a seizure after not receiving a narcotic medication for 4 days. There were 3 other nurses involved. The nurse that gave that last pill sent the refill to the pharmacy and called the doctor on call service.  It was reported to each shift that the med was on order ect.. that nurse was off for 2 days and upon returning followed up on the script again to no avail. I was not assigned the unit but passed narcs for a nurse that isn't allowed to pass them, I noted that the script was out and saw it was on order and assumed that it was on the way (can happen quite often in LTC) anyway the next day the resident had a seizure and was sent out... There was a DCF report filed for abuse and neglect against all of us for failing to call the DON when noticing the medication was out.  Now DCF has sent the information to the board for further investigation.  Per my training I thought I was following protocol and the accusation is a misfiled prescription.  I am just wondering how far this could go and what could happen? My DON tells me not to worry about it and this is not uncommon but I am freaking out because I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't give the last pill in the card and I had seen that the med was on order.  There was absolutely no malice or laziness involved.  The entire facility received an in-service regarding the proper protocol and after speaking to many other nurses, none of them knew to call the DON or would have called the DON. If it was just me , I could understand the need for reprimand , but none of us 4 called the DON.  Thoughts???? I just don't want my license suspended or revoked for something I had no knowledge of. Thank you
