Best Reference Book for PICU Nurses

Hi Everyone,

I am a new grad who is in a PICU Residency Program. Can anyone suggest a really good reference book for the PICU? I was looking at AACN Core Curriculum for Pediatric Critical Care and I was wondering if anyone else used this reference book.

Any suggestions are appreciated!!!:D

Why is no one responding?

Sorry! I'm not ignoring you, it's just that it's been a very long time since I worked in a PICU, so I don't know the current "best" books. But, back in my day, anything by Mary Fran Hazinski was considered to be top notch. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Fran Hazinski's is still the best out there. As a matter of fact I was just looking something up in it today! Good luck! Lynn

Anything by Martha Curley is also worth a look.

Mary Fran Hazinski- Pediatric Critical Care Nursing is the gold standard but it's not cheap. I think there is a smaller lighter soft cover refernce that goes along with that has a lot of the same information. I use my Hazinski all the time and even lug it with me on my travel assignments.

Love Mary Frann and MAQ

also core curriculum by Slota

Fran Blayney publisehd a great one out of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. 323-660-2450 in the hospital's main no. I don't know her direct line.

does anyone have any good sites to download info on cvads? i need to teach a nursethe basics and although i have made a manual on cvads, i feel there must be some better references out there. thank you.

I use Hazinski's book and have attended several of her lectures. I encourage anyone in PICU to get Gaedeke's book Pediatric and Neonatal Critical care. I is a review book, but an excellent source of information. It can be found on barne's and Nobles' web site. There are other books but, sadly they are out of print. they include Roger's 2 volume set. I hope this helps.

For new nurses to the PICU our nurse educator requires that we pick up "Manual of Pediatric Criticl Care" by Mary Fran Hazinski. Our residents and nurses both use the "Handbook of Pediatric Intensive Care" by Rogers and Helfaer. Hope this helps!
