Best Pocket Reference?

Hey all,

Just wanted to get your opinions on the best pocket reference for a flight nurse to carry. I've looked at the ER checkmate, and Kathy White's Fast Facts. The Checkmate is smaller, and has plastic pages, but alot less info. Kathy's FF has alot more info, and has modules that can be added, but it's also larger and has paper pages.

Right now I carry an ICU pocket reference that's so beat up I think it's going to disintigrate next time I open it. What does everyone use, and what do you think of it?

I don't know if you carry a PDA. Most of our crew now has Kathy Whites book as well as checkmate and several others on our PDA's. We have also loaded our SMO's on them. It is nice to go from multiple books to carrying one tool.

Get a Palm device. You will be able to carry literlally hundreds of medical, nursing and drug references, calculators, infusion guides and more. Instead of 2,4 or more pocket books just carry 1 palm. Same size but loads of information at your fingertips. Plus, at night and it is dim/dark, most new Palms are color and have lighted screens (old ones did not except for a funky green light) and so viewing is easy.

Second to getting a Palm, I would suggest "UNBC Critical Care Transport Field Guide" and was sold to our transport class as we took a course entitled CCEMT-P (critical care emergency medical transport-provider). It is small enough to fit into your thigh pocket on flight fatigues or anywhere else and the pages are all covered so fluids will not stain them or rip easily. These last two issues are problems with Kathy White's book of Fast Facts, I personally used it in the ICU, but I think it (Kathy White) would get demolished in the field as its pages are tissue thin and would become soaked/stained very quickly. The rain is no place to be pulling out a Palm, I used the UMBC reference alot of times when the Palm was not accessible. Hope this helps.
