best experience

So right now I'm working as a per-diem visiting nurse. I get paid for every visit I conduct and there's a lot of flexibility. I just got offered a school nurse job in the public school system. My long term goal- hopefully soon goal, is to work in a hospital at least for a bit of time. The visits I conduct have pretty in depth assessments and there's a lot of opportunity in this area for full-time salaried positions as well. I'm conflicted. Working in a school is a stable gig, but I think maybe the assessments might look better for other jobs and there is flexibility so I can interview at other places. Also I've talked to school nurses and not sure if it's really something I want to do. Any advice? Have to decide soon. Thanks!

Are you a new nurse, OP?

Hahhahahaha, never mind, just looked at your name. :)

I would wait to do school nursing. You are the only person in the building an all the issues fall on you. Your assessment skills and communication skills must be primo.

Despite that, much of the nursing world still looked down on school nursing as a "soft" or "easy" gig. Which makes me laugh, as it's the hardest job I've done, but whatever.

I have 20 years hospital experience under my belt, and despite my lack of BSN I haven't had a problem getting jobs.

I would keep looking and try for a hospital gig.

Thanks that's what I thought. Thanks for answering. With the assessments, less risk because you aren't providing direct care. I have all the respect for school nurses. There is some training involved in this school nurse job but yeah you're right, being that independent with no experience is risky.

There are lots that do it. I wouldn't. I'm glad I took the path I did.

We have a few pretty great nurses over on the school nurse board who started out in school nursing. You should check it out if you are still on the fence.
