Beneficence

Is volunteer nursing a form of beneficence? I have to do a presentation for my nursing class on the ethical principle beneficence. Can someone give me any advice on any other forms of beneficence in nursing? Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Yes it is considered an act of charity.

Beneficence could also be working real hard for your patients, making sure they have everything they need including discharge instructions without making them feel helpless. It could be in a psychiatric setting, helping a client calm down even though he has been combative, and letting him talk out his feelings.

Beneficence is one of the primary parts of the Nursing Code of Ethics. As you know, beneficence can be defined as the Ethical principl based on the beliefs that the health-care provider should do no harm, prevent harm, remove existing harm, and promote the good and well-being of the client.

When a nurse chooses to perform a pain assessment and request and order for medication from a Doctor as one of the first interventions, it is an act of beneficence.

When a nurse practices therapeutic communication to help the patient work through their concerns, it is an act of beneficence.

When a nurse respects the cultural practices of a patient and makes an effort to incorporate ethnic folk remedies with western medical practices, this is also an act of beneficence.

Nursing is among the professions that require the greatest degree of beneficence to be successful.
