azithromycin I.V.

Has anyone given azithromycin I.V. to an infant less than 2 months. We have found one site that said it was o.k. but others that said not recommended to infants less than 2 months. Also, does anyone know the reason why it was not recommended in most places except one? Thanks.

i have never give azithromycin I.V. to an infant or a child.. Im wondering if somewhere else this is done. I f that is the case , what special precautions are needed.

The 10th edition (2003) of Lexi-Comp's Pediatric Dosage Handbook (considered the "Bible" of pediatric and neonatal medications) ONLY mentions IV dosing with adolescents greater or equal to 16 years of age. This is a red flag in itself. Maybe a later edition would give some more information about administration in children/ infants...

In a lot of cases with peds, you will find that no information will exist for pediatric dosing. The usual reason for this is that it is very difficult to enroll infants/children into clinical trials for a drug. The end result is that dosing information for peds has to be extrapolated from the data that the adult population produces.

However, most of the resources that I looked at do not have azithromycin doses listed for anything under 6 months.
