Appropriate additional PRN job

I'm about 4 months in to my first nursing job. It's been okay for me and I've had an excellent orientation. I work 3 days per week, but I've found I don't like too much time off. I'd like to work an additional PRN job (once a week/every other week), or perhaps volunteer, but I'm not really interested in doing an additional 12 hour shift on my unit. What would be an appropriate place to look? I want to broaden my current knowledge as I continue to learn in my current position and I'm interested in research.

I've thought about the local public health departments, but they're all in a budget crunch (who isn't) and only have a single FT position listed on their websites. I can't think of anything else though. I'm sure someone out there is more creative when it comes to looking for this kind of thing.

I'd strongly suggest you find something to do to fill your time that isn't related to nursing/medicine. I know you're new at this point and that the new-nurse rush probably hasn't stopped, but you may very quickly find that you need distancing from nursing and the responsibilities therein.

It isn't healthy to constantly be working. Pick up a hobby, volunteer at a state park, join a group in MeetUp, or do something that fills your time without contributing to your overall burnout risk.

I agree with SoldierNurse22 BUT if you are dead set on finding something that you can do as infrequently as once a week to once every other week, I'd check out private duty agencies.

Our long term facility has some PRN peeps who they use. They are trained for a few days, get to know the patients (we are smaller facility), learn the emar and charting system, and them call them in a pinch. The nurses seem to do well and like the change. You might look around and let the DONs know what you are looking for. Bet you would be surprised. It is a different atmosphere, but might be what you are looking for. Good Luck.
