Applying to School: The Intent Statement

I'm in the process of applying to an accelerated BSN program and am having a great deal of trouble nailing down what I want to say in my intent statement. I want to talk about my personal experiences with health care and the need for more and well-trained nursing staff in healthcare. I have been struggling with whether or not I should talk about my father and his experience with small cell lung cancer--he passed away from SCLC a few years ago--and my mom's struggle with diabetes and related complications. I want to make my statement personal, but I don't want to alienate the person reading the application. I'm thinking I could relate or contrast my experiences in the hospital with my dad to how I would want to treat my patients some day.

Any ideas or guidance?
