I just want to know from people who have a masters degree that is NOT NP related or Education related or CRNA? How is the job market out there. Can u please share what ur Masters is in and how is the job market?Im interested in obtaining a Masters degree and I AM focusing on what I enjoy doing. And I dont think its being an NP or teaching. Are there loads of other options based on your experience?

My hospital employs CNS's in the clinical setting, and they're often clinicians on the floors/units. You can also go for an MBA or a nursing/health care administration masters. Unfortunately, if you're interested in remaining at the bedside every day, I think that there aren't many places who will pay you significantly more just for getting an MS. Midwifery programs are generally at the master's level as well.

I was recently advised by our Diabetes Educator that CN's are no more....there are no jobs. She said if she had to do it over, she'd be an NP.

Public Health is one option. I dont know too many nurses personally with an MPH and what exactly they use it for though. Maybe someone can enlighten me bcos I would love to know too. Another option is an MBA. But an MBA on its own really limits you I heard. The choices in regards to jobs are limited. There can only be one CNO of a hospital. Does anyone know any nurse with a masters in Health Care administration????

Have you considered getting a masters in informatics? This is a really hot new area - currently there simply aren't enough qualified nurses. That's why we are all suffering with really squirrely electronic charting systems - they were designed without nurse input. Grads are being hired by the big sofware companies (Cerner, Meditech, etc.) as well as healthcare organizations. In my company, our nurse informaticists also work closely with the quality people to extract and analyze data.

In my part of the country, we still have CNS jobs.

I know this is an old post - but I just wanted to give my 2 cents. I have a Masters Degree in Health Services Administration, and it never did a thing for me except look good on a resume. Without a degree in finance, or an MBA, it is unlikely I would be hired in administration unless I crawled up the nursing supervision ladder, just like everyone else. It was an easy degree to get, relatively speaking, but is not targeted.
