I am interviewing for a job as a new grad on an inpatient acute crisis unit...I had a clinical rotation there and loved it, but I am just curious about what the downfalls to a career in psych could be. What are some of the things you don't like about working in psych?

frustration with there not being enough money to keep patients long enough to do good work with them. We are frequently pushed to discharge patients before they are ready. Ingeneral health insurance underfunds psych. I suppose that is the publics own fault. We get what we are will ing to pay for. Everyone can imagine being in an acident or having a major illness strike them, but thinks they aer going to become depressed or have a schizophrenic son?
Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

When the patient census drops too low, I do not like the fact that my shifts are cancelled and I am sent home for the day.

These are the top 3 that sprung to mind.

1. The violence and unpredictability of some pts

2. Managers telling me how to do my job who aren't nurses and/or never worked the floor

3. Pseudotherapists

As I get older the violence has become more bothersome to me. I don't know why that is. Please keep in mind that most pts are more likely to be victims than assailants but there are those that you need to take serious precautions with to protect everyone involved. I hope your interview went well. Best Wishes
