I'll be graduating in December and I've recently moved to the Akron area. I did a stint as an extern at Medina General and loved it however, I don't know anything about Akron General or Akron City/Summa. Some have mentioned that I should go back to Medina after graduation.Yes, pay is a factor but distance, working conditions, opportunities for advancement, benefits, etc, etc are also factors. Help?

Thanks for your input

Shangrila - Both Akron General and Summa are great places to work. I am currently an LPN, working on my RN, with expected graduation in May 09. I have been working as an LPN at Akron General, but will also consider Summa for future opportunities.

Summa appears to be a little more flexible with shift opportunities, i.e., weekend warrior options, specialty spots, etc. They have also undergone some changes by considering direct input from nursing, which helps to improve nursing morale.

AGMC might be undergoing some new growing pains right now. Plus, there is always the fact that RN's belong to a union there, with union dues at end of first year. They are now computerized for meds, vitals, assessments, which I believe caused a lot of growing-pain turmoil amongst the ranks....called change. All, in all, still a great place to work.

Good luck with your decision, and congratulations!!:yeah:

I worked at Arkon General and loved it. Great place, great people. Good luck with your decesion!

Union dues aren't that bad, btw. Never really noticed them, they come out pretax. and the computer charting is the best I used.

I started at Akron General as A new-grad. I think it has a pretty good nurse residency program (12 weeks). I think like all institions there is room for improvement. I do like computerized charting. I don't see many openings t omove up though.

I worked at Summa as a unit secretary a few years ago and loved it. I am in an ADN program now and when I move back to OH, I plan on working in SUMMA again. They are the biggest employeer in Summit Co, and have lots of perks of being an employee.

I am a new grad and work for Summa. I love it so far. Great starting pay and lots of flexibility. One thing to consider with Akron General is they don't hire new nurses unless they have a BSN~ you didn't mention if u were BSN or ADN so thought I would share that with you in either case. Good luck to you!

Thanks for all of your input as it assisted me in my decision. I ended up accepting a position at Medina General. I had done a stint as a student nurse extern this past summer and really enjoyed it. Thanks again!

CONGRATULATIONS, Shangrila!!!! You made it through that two-year journey. When you help all those patients, and see smiles on their faces and in their hearts, because of your care....it will all be worth it!!

Good luck, and keep us that are still on the school journey encouraged-LOL.

Again, congratulations!!!

Summa has many locatoins to choose from, Akron, Barberton, Wadsworth, St Thomas ect, and you can transfer easily from one campus to the other without losing your service. they have good benifits & pays well, My daughter started at Summa and found that they pay a little better then some of the others.

I did apply for several positions at Summa and was really excited about the possibility of working there however, I had not received a call so therefore, I chose Medina. I had heard through the grapevine that Summa takes the University of Akron students first and unfortunately, I didn't graduate from there. I began my orientation this week at Medina and so far, so good!

congrats!! I have heard many good things about Medina. Best of Luck
