Air Force Specialty Interview

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge about the phone specialty interview for the Air Force? Specifically the ER and CC phone interviews? Does it involve more of just questions about your work experience or do they drill you with specific knowledge about your specialty? What other questions do they ask?

Specializes in ED. ICU, PICU, infection prevention, aeromedical e.

It's not a nursing test. The interview is by a higher ranking nurse - generally not one performing nursing duties, but leadership responsibilities. The interviewer won't be cutting edge high end bedside care nurse so that will not be the direction of the interview. The interview is not about nursing. It's about how you would fit into the military.

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

Yeah, the nurse doing the interview is going to be an O-5 or higher (probably an O-6). There's no way that person has done any direct patient care in over a decade. The specialty interview is a new thing, though. They didn't have that when I interviewed.

Specializes in Psych/Substance abuse.

I actually had my interview yesterday with the chief nurse telephonically. Usually it is in person on base but because of time restraints and the budget, the telephone interview was scheduled.

You should know the AF mission/core values, why you want to join, what you would contribute to the AF, think of an ethical dilemma you have dealt with, another time you used your critical thinking skills, what you know and think about deployment, what your family thinks about you joining, your fitness level… If you have a good health professions recruiter, they should have provided you with the actual grading sheet they use during the interview.

I actually think the interview was more informative for me. The chief nurse that I spoke with was very nice and she explained what your job would consist of. She reviews your packet and brings up any questions the board might have come selection time. She then opens up the discussion to any questions you have. And make sure you address them properly. J

Specializes in NICU.

I had my interview a week and a half ago. It really wasn't that bad. It lasted about an hour and a half. She asked me questions about what clinical experience I had, what patients I had seen, ethical issues in the NICU I see. What I feel about evidence based practice and interdisciplinary rounding. She asked me how my family felt about my joining the military, how I felt about deployments since I wouldn't be deployed as a NICU nurse, but Adult, what I felt about the places i could go for the NICU. What else I wanted to do to advance as a nurse and as a nurse in the Air Force.

she asked me if I had any questions for her and I definitely utilized that. Which speciality are you interviewing for?

Did you have a second interview over the phone? I had my interview with the Chief Nursing Officer at the beginning of September. My recruiter just called and told me I would have to do a second interview over the phone as well because I'm applying as an Emergency nurse. How was the second interview? What questions were you asked?

Specializes in NICU.

The questions I put in the post above yours is what my specialty interview consisted of. It wasn't hard at all. She was super nice and it was an easy conversation with her. She was super personable.

Did your recruiter set up the date and time for the phone interview. How did you know when this interview would take place with the specialty nurse?

Specializes in NICU.

Yes my recruiter set up the time and date. Although as always, I had to remind him that we needed to schedule it ASAP because he always likes to do things last minute. So he asked me what my availability was, he emailed her and based on what I said I could do, he set the interview up and got her phone number for me. So on the date it was scheduled, I called her at 10am her time, 11am my time. And then the interview went on for about an hour and a half and she said she was going to email me when she sent it out. Are you applying for October boards or in the future?

The questions that are listed above for the specialty interview were some of the questions at my chief nurse interview. I wonder if it was a chief and specialty interview at the same meeting? I'm still waiting for a phone interview but have no word as of yet. Wondering if I already competed it in person. Any thoughts?

Mine was very low key - the person who called had my information and just asked if I had any questions and she gave me her contact info should I have any questions leading up to my entry to the AF.
