Advice for a working/single parent

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum and was looking for some advice. I have a degree in Business Administration and after 8 years of working a desk job, I am sure that I want to go back to school for nursing. My question is for those of you who are a single parent also working a full time job. Is it even possible to go back to school and if so how did you manage your time to make it work? Is it better to try to do part-time, full time, accelerated, or wait all together?

My daughter is only three and I work 40 hours a week (10 to 6, M-F), resulting in the weekend to be my real quality time with my daughter. Is now the right time to do this or will I be spreading myself out too thin? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I can't answer, as I am a single mom buy did not work full time through prereqs or nursing school. I did work on call. Sometimes 40 hrs/wk sometimes zero hours.

I hope someone on here with that experience can get back to you!

From a financial perspective are you able to support yourself along with the child if you were to reduce your hours? What is your support system like? Is she in daycare/preschool? I worked fulltime while doing prereqs, then my job closed during which I was without a job for a few months. Now I am doing work part time and school fulltime with minimal outside support. Find your balance and happy place! Being that you have your Bachelors, an accelerated program is a great option (one I considered, but the price did not align with my budget). Similarly, how flexible are your job hours... many programs may be days or evenings within those times....
