Advice for potential future nurse

Specializes in currently in school for medical lab technician.

Hi all,

I apologize in advance for the lengthy post.

I'm looking for some words of wisdom. In summary, I always thought I wanted to be a nurse. Until I got my CNA license when I was 19. I was hired at the LTC that I did my clinicals at. I think I lasted two weeks before I put in my resignation letter. I chalk this up to being young/inexperienced, having anxiety that I never fully acknowledged and didn't know how to manage, and some poor on the job training.

I've spent 5 or 6 years in school having changed my major 3 times  (however, I always expressed that I wished I had it in me to be a nurse). I decided that I wasn't capable of being in the medical field and majored in business. A year later I majored in accounting. I was 1 or two semesters away from completing my accounting degree when I dropped because it didn't feel right.

After a lot of work experience and being toughened up by the world I have no found myself halfway through my medical lab technician program with good feedback from the program director and other professors.

Now, my heart has not fully abandoned nursing. Now that I have some experience with people who have an extensive background in the medical field I have received a few offhand comments of them saying they think I would've made a good nurse.

After having a minimal amount of experience with school in the medical setting and a lot of time to grow up and mature. I really think I want to give nursing a go.

My plan is to finish my MLT program and get certified because I'm already halfway through.

Does anyone have advice? Should I go for it? Has anyone been in a similar situation? I feel ridiculous being so flip floppy on this subject. I'm at a loss and would love to hear some feedback from experienced individuals or even just some advice from current students.

How did you get over that fear and take the leap?

With all of my heart I want to so badly...

Thank you in advance!!
