Hi! I'm an R.N. with 8 years experience in O.B.
I may be moving to a new city in the next year. I'm not ready to move yet though. Finding the right job is important to my decision about whether I move or not. My question is...how can I find out more about a L&D unit without actually going through an interview? I have the number for the nurse manager of the unit but I don't know whether I should call her and ask questions over the phone or try to set up a meeting to talk about the unit ( has anyone ever done this?) I don't have any connections from friends or co-workers to tell me more about this specific hospital/unit.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get more information without going through an interview?
Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with calling the nurse manager and asking your questions. I work OB/L&D, and I do alot of the orientation of new nurses to our unit. Alot of them did call and inquire before they decided that it was my hospital that they wanted to come. I have also answered the phone to nurses looking to move to a coastal area, and just call to ask what our facility is like. So, I guess my answer would be "yes, by all means, call and ask!!" You never know, whatever place you are inquiring about may be in a big hiring cycle, and you just might be welcomed with open arms
