Adelphi nursing program, anyone have any info?

Published

I just met with an admissions counselor and she told me that given my GPA and NET results, I will get admitted. I applied for the undergraduate program as a transfer student. I took a look at the curriculum and I got the impression that it's all lecture. Is that true? There has to be hands-on practical experience, right? In addition, the counselor said it should take me 2 years to complete the program, given that I have no science prereqs completed. Does this sound realistic? The shortest time I heard so far has been NYU with 2.5yrs.

I'm currently enrolled in Adelphi's nursing program as a 2nd degree student. I am almost one year into the program and mostly like it so far. I, like you, did not complete the science pre-req's when I applied. However, I was told by my nursing advisor that it would take at least 2.5 years (because I need to complete these pre-req's). It sounds like the admissions counselor who spoke to you tried hard to get you to enroll & pay the high tuition. The courses incorporate both hands-on skills and lecture components, not all lecture. Adelphi is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and another similar agency. The school, therefore, must follow certain protocols that help prepare its students for the NCLEX. The program is not bad; the professors are knowledgable & helpful for the most part. There are also issues here like many other places, and not all the professors are kind nor helpful. It's also tough to get tutoring with the nursing classes except for 1 day a week because they're having trouble finding someone to staff it. This is extremely important as you take more advanced classes. The school seems very money hungry with the expensive school cafeteria food and per credit rates (one 5 credit class in the summer is costing me close to $5,000). This is one of my complaints. However, I have learned a lot from the classes themselves. Also, you are not allowed to take nursing classes in the summer (such as N265, etc.) unless you are enrolled in their accelerated program (for those who completed the science pre-req's). Many people find this out too late; it's therefore tough to speed up graduation. You are allowed to take non-nursing classes in the summer only, which I suspect is another way they are trying to make more money. They want to keep the students in the school longer. In short, it's a good school, but it does have its negatives as well. I would suggest you get your transcript evaluated by a real nursing advisor than the admission counselor. NYU is very expensive, and from what I hear isn't necessarily the best option, but feel free to ask around. Then, research all your options & schools. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. 2 years did seem overly optimistic to me, even though the prereqs are only 4 courses. I'm guessing I should estimate it will take 3 years. Unfortunately I can't take any courses this summer, so won't be able to get the prereqs out of the way.

I also applied to Molloy College, their DDP program. It's more selective, so not sure I will get in. They gave me 3 years to complete w/o prereqs and including some grad level courses. I'm not sure how realistic that is as well.

Hi I am new here, and just wanted to know how you made an appt with the admissions counselor? I would like make an appt.

Thanks for your help

I went to their transfer student open house. I think they have another one in May, I remember seeing a flyer. Go to their site and check. I had to rsvp to the event and a week before they called me to make an appointment. This is actually the only thing I went for so I was done in 1/2 hour. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you can still see someone, just give them a call.

What are the science pre requisite for Adelphi University?

hello everyone,

can i ask you a few quetions, please? i am a transfer student coming from bmcc/kbcc. all along i was planning to go to liu and i have been taking my pre-reqs according to liu's program, but now i think that i might not make it in (i got as & bs on most of the science pre-reqs, but i also got one c, which i think hurt me immensely). i have almost 60 credits (some of which i probably will not need if i don't get into liu). since now i have no idea where i might end up, i started looking around. i'm thinking about applying to adelphi university. from reading your posts and also posts on http://www.studentsreview.com, i see that people are saying positive things about adelphin. i'm going to an open house on april 7th, 2010. so we'll see how that goes.

so my question is - how difficult is it to get in to adelphi? what is the gpa expectation? i learned not to trust what the school website says (liu said 3.0 is enough, but when i tried to apply they wanted a lot higher gpa since the program is so competitive). only people who actually applied to adelphi would know what the real expectations are. that's why i am asking here. also, how difficult is the nursing placement exam, teas? what kind of topics should i study to do well on it? is there a prep book? any help would be greatly appreciated :)

thanks a million

Applicants must be graduates of a recognized four-year high school or academy, or must offer acceptable evidence of official equivalent preparation. Adelphi prefers freshmen who have successfully completed a minimum of 16 academic units. Each applicant is considered, however, on the basis of his or her individual academic record, plus co-curricular activities. It is recommended that academic units include:

  • English (4 units)
  • Science (3 units)
    General Science may be included.
  • Mathematics (3 units)
  • Foreign language (2-3 units)
  • Additional 4 units to be chosen from history, social studies, and the above fields of study.

I am an Adelphi Nursing student now. I have a bachelor of arts degree already. You can finish in 2 years if you take summer classes. Please be advised that Adelphi University offers very little academic/emotional support while you are here. Some of the professors are not the best lecturers and you can not get a final grade of anything below C+ more than once. There are better schools in NY whose tuitions are not as high and Nursing instructors and programs are better.

I have read that Touro is a great school. I am seeking to enter another nursing program. I am still 50/50 on whether I should stay at Adelphi or go to another school, The school I am considering is GWU, God willing if I get in.

How long have u been in the program?
