Adding additional documents to application

Did anybody voluntarily add letters of recommendation or personal essays in addition to your nursing school application, even if it wasn't necessary? Do you think it helped your chances of being accepted?

The school I'm applying to doesn't require either of those but I thought it might be nice to show how bad I want this.

    I've recently applied to multiple schools (waiting to hear back) and sent each one 2 recommendations, a resume, and an essay regardless of what they required. I figured it couldn't hurt to do so.
