ADD in the ED

Published

Hey yaaallll!

just want to know if there is anybody out here diagnosed clinically with ADD currently working in the ER and how they manage?

I have ADD and work in the ED. I've found that the constant variety and constant busy work keeps me engaged and focused. I also feel I do better in ED than on, say, med surg or ICU because of the difference in task schedule. In the ED, orders go in and I see them. Then I perform them. On the floor, I have to worry about glucose checks before each meal, assessments Qx hours, oral care Q2hours, turning Q2, vitals Q2, etc. I don't do well with scheduling and remembering to do things.

I also take adderall which works wonders for my ability to focus and productiveness.

I had to be medicated! Adderall was my enemy in high school, but I've learned to cope with taking it. I found that taking smaller amounts three times a day helps keep me focused all day. Medication has saved my butt!!

Having my areas organized helps a lot, I make sure all rooms are stocked in the morning, and that I have all supplies at hand. I always carry scissors and tape on me so I don't have to go searching for some, and get distracted during the process. Eating a good breakfast and lunch helps as well.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and re-diagnosed with adult ADHD prior to nursing school. I found working in the ED always keeps me engaged as opposed to medsurg.
