Accepted at Both!! What do I do???

I'm soo happy :) I've worked so hard and it has finally paid off!! I just got my admission letters to start at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) ASN program in Fall and also North Georgia College and State University's (NGCSU) ASN program in Fall. Here are my stats:

Gender: Male

Age: 25

Education: Prior Bachelors in Computer Information Systems (GPA: 3.3)

Pre-requisite GPA: 3.9

TEAS Score: 98th Percentile Nationwide

NET Score: Math - 100%, Verbal - seventy something

I know it's bad to think like this when there are so many people hoping to get into at least one, but I'm bummed. I've heard bad things about GPC's program but haven't heard anything at all about NGCSU's program. I know GPC's program takes like 2 years, and NGCSU's takes like a year plus. Any one have any advice for me? Thanks, I appreciate it!

From what I have North Georgia would be my choice. I have afriend who just graduated from Perimeter and told me not to go there. Others at North Georgia seem very happy.

Well, first I want to say congratulations! :balloons: I am at GA Perimeter right now finishing up pre-reqs and I considered going to their ASN program but got turned off by the negativity and seeming disrespect for students. Even just talking to the admission advisors, you felt as if they already thought you would fail. I have a friend who didn't do so hot on the NET (she has a 3.5 GPA though and is very bright and should be commended for starting school at the age of 35 w/ 3 little girls, btw) when she tried to talk to them about it, they made her feel horrible and totally discouraged her, she is now applying to Brenau. From what I hear of students in the program, they are mostly miserable, some are happy, but they have a high percentage drop out (lack of support). If you do a search on these boards (check out the Georgia Forum) then you will get some other stories like these. Regardless, it's doable, but you need to be prepared to deal with the problems. The fact that you have been accepted to NGCSU would make it a no-brainer for me, they have an EXCELLENT program. I have a friend that goes there right now who is very happy. If you would like, I may be able to put you in touch with her so that you can ask some questions. As for me, I got into Kennesaw State University (BSN) (I only applied there after doing all my research, though if I wanted to do a ASN I would have applied to NGCSU). You have to be very careful. Just because a program is hard to get into doesn't mean it's good. To me, it seems as if GA Perimeter has chosen to be "unkind" to its prospective students just because it can (why is beyond me), they have plenty of applicants so they don't have to be super nice to get people into the program. To me it's ridiculous. I got turned off by the first phone call and it just got worse from there. They assume when they talk to you that you are not good enough for their program. This turns away the good students and discourages the ones who need some work, instead of encouraging them to work harder. Now, I don't want to offend anyone who goes there, there are always 2 sides to every story, but after hearing other reports like the one I just described, I have to conclude that my experiences with the program are more the norm. If I were you I'd visit both departments with a list of questions like: How many students drop out? What is your NCLEX pass rate? What kind of supportive measures do you have in place for students that are struggling? Etc. Make sure the program you choose WANTS YOU to succeed. At NGCSU they even refer to their professors by their first names. To me that shows that they value a "partnership" with their students. You may also be able to view the two different program's handbooks on the web, maybe you'll get a better idea from that as well.

Congratulations!!! That's a really 'wonderful' problem to have -- acceptance at two nursing schools!!! :)

I also got my acceptance letter from NGCSU yesterday -- but for the Cumming/Alpharetta site. Is this where you were accepted, also? Does anyone have any idea exactly where it's located in Alpharetta/Cumming? I live in West Cobb, so I'm wondering if a commute is even reasonable, or if I should look into moving...

I am very excited about NGCSU -- I've heard nothing but wonderful things about their program. I'm wondering about getting an ASN when I can potentially get a BSN for the very same amount of time...though I think I really might love NGCSU. I'm tempted to just go for the ASN and not worry about it -- bridge over after I'm working, at some point.

I also applied at KSU and got put on the waiting list for the Traditional BSN. (I applied for Accelerated, but my letter didn't say anything about the Accelerated program. ??? Oh well.) Does anyone know what my odds might be of getting into KSU after being put on the waiting list? (I will have all my pre-req's completed before August...) I know it depends on where you fall on the list, but in general, does anyone know how many usually end up getting in, off of the waiting list?

Well, congratulations, again. I think if I had to choose between NGCSU and Georgia Perimeter, I'd choose NGCSU -- no question about it.

Please, anyone...........People do graduate from GPC, there must be something positive that happens there. OK, so your on your own a lot with little support from faculty, what else? Please someone send positive feedback because I may have to go there due to Ga Baptist being too expensive. I know of some people going to the program doing fine but EVERYTHING else is rumors of horror stories. The question remains, are we going on what we hear? Because I say the same thing all the time....."I've heard bad things." Or do we have comments of real people in the program. HELP!!!

OK I do understand what you are saying about rumor and hearsay! I have not gone to GPC nursing. I do know someone who just graduated, she has told me, under her breath, to go somewhere else. I believe what she is saying. I also believe that a nursing student could make it through, but it will be a stressful couple of years. I just do not want that experience for myself.

If your situation is such that GPC is your best choice then if you go in knowing that and find some other resources outside of school to help you along you will probably do fine. One thing I do know is that the way the curricullum is handled at GPC is such that if you wanted to transfer after 1-2 semesters some of the classes are not tranferrable.

Hi I would look at there Nclex pass rate and also their grading scale because if I had it to due over again I would check around my school has a great pass rate but their grading scale is different. So I would check that. I had a GPA of 3.69 before nursing I am in my 3rd semester with 5 weeks to go with a GPA of 3.22. This has been the most chalenging thing I have ever done good luck to you.

I was in your exact shoes one year ago - accepted to GPC and NGCSU. I was also really torn between the two because I loved my pre-req teachers at GPC and I thought I wanted to go to nursing school there. But like another poster, I had friends already in the program (who did graduate), and they told me to run as fast as I could. I have never met anyone happy at GPC. I did not make my final decision until 2 weeks before classes started, but I took a leap of faith and went for the unknown (NGCSU). I am so happy with my decision. I am three weeks away from being a second year student!! I cannot say enough about how great our program is! The professors are very supportive, they really do want you to to succeed, and it absolutely tears them up when someone doesn't do well. They do ask us to call them by their first name - I was really shocked! It really feels like a team effort. At NGCSU, you really become close to your classmates, and we spend a lot of time studying together and helping each other out. You have to make the decision for yourself, but I can promise you that you will never regret your decision to attend NGCSU! I hope to see you at "I Can" Camp in August!! :balloons:

Hey!! When I first got into my program (NGCSU) 2 years ago I heard nothing but bad things......from students who had been turned down etc. My experience has been great and I graduate in 4 weeks!! You should be so proud of yourself for your acceptance!!!! I have some classmates that took pre-reqs at GPC and had a great experience. If you decide to take GPC due to finances you have to just go into it with your all.....Do what you have to do!!.....You would not have gotten into both schools if you did not have the brains to make it. Nursing school is the hardest thing I have ever done.....Just go into it knowing you have to kick butt and you can make it through anything!! I believe any program is what you make of it....So much of it is attitude and if you can relay your passion for nursing to your instructors that may really help you......Be proud of yourself! Good luck in whatever you decide.....
