Accepted into accelerated BSN!

I got into an accelerated BSN program at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. I am extremely excited and I cannot wait to start in the fall. I am pretty much expecting to have no life outside of my classmates since the workload of 2 years of nursing courses are compressed into 12 months. Basically, I am just looking for other people's experiences on what to expect. Additionally, I would like to work a little bit as a phlebotomist, but I am not sure how flexible hospitals usually are in regards to hours. I think maybe a day or 2 a week is all I could realistically think of doing. Anyway, I can't wait for November to roll around.

    Congratulations! I'm about to start my final semester of an accelerated program, ours is a total of 18 months.

    It's hard, very hard. You have to be dedicated and time is everything. Some semesters are more difficult than others. I had to learn to prioritize.

    I have 2 kids and work PRN at a local hospital. I'm lucky if I can fit in one 12 hour shift. I usually try to work on Friday, we usually have class M-Th, but a few semesters we have had class all week.

    Expect a lot of studying, not much social life and less sleep. But it's worth it. I find that it has gotten somewhat easier, maybe because I'm finally good at writing the dreaded care plan or because I know what to look for in the charts for my paperwork.

    Congrats on your acceptance! I work as a tech in the ER and one of my main duties is phlebotomy. It's great experience but it may not be feasible to work while you're in the ABSN program. Are you already certified as a phlebotomist? It took me about 6 months from the time I started my phlebotomy program to when I actually received my certification, most of that time was spent waiting for the state to process my paperwork. Even if you were able to complete a phlebotomy program before school starts, you might not even have the time to work once it starts. Good luck to you!
