ABSN/ETP options

Published

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had some advice for schools to apply to. I eventually want to become a nurse practitioner. I have experience as an EMT, medical assistant, and some experience working as a tissue recovery technician. I live in the northeast and would like to stay close, and NYC seems like a good option for me. I got a 3.44 in my undergrad. Does anyone have any advice on schools to look at? I plan on applying to Columbia, NYU, and Johns Hopkins so far, not sure how competitive I would be though.

Are you big into a "name" school? Are you planning on staying in NY after graduation? If you plan to get a BSN then stop the name of the school really doesn't matter. If you are going to grad school it MAY have a difference. However most important are the grades and GRE and what you did as a nurse.

If you want name check out Georgetown as well. Also GWU is good. Drexel. Personally I like state schools. I think you get more for the money. If you are "free" why not explore a little. Univ of South Carolina. Clemson. Duke. Univ of NC. Univ. of Virginia. Just start applying and see what happens.

Hey Windsurfer, it's not particularly the name of the school, but the programs themselves. I know I want to become a nurse practitioner, so I'm a fan of the entry to practice programs. I really like Columbia's program for the option to work as an RN after finishing the BSN portion, and I feel like finding a job in the city would be easy. The appeal of NYC for me is that it is less than an hour from where I live now and my boyfriend would likely have an easy time finding a job or even be able to stay where he's at now. I'll most likely apply to Rutgers and Drexel as well, and Georgetown and GWU sound good too since they are close to my family in VA.

Any other programs that are similar to Columbia in that they have the option to work after the BSN and then enter directly into the MSN portion?
