Abbreviations List

Hi. Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I'm wondering if there is an abbreviation list on this site for commonly used abbreviations (outside of direct medical abbreviations). I've been here a few days but I don't know many definitions for words such as: med-serg, premium pay, per diem, stacked and so forth

First off I can tell you that Med-Surg means a medical/surgical unit and per diem means that you work "on call" and that you work less than part time (or that's how it is at my hospital anyway). For other abbreviations that come up you can always google it to find the answer or check out some medical books with abbreviations in the front and back covers. Besides that, if you are already in nursing school you will learn them as you go, and if you're just curious, there are plenty of ways to find abbreviations on-line or in medical books. Good luck to you :)

Is anyone familiar with PPY in regard to tobacco use? I believe it means packs per year as in he is a 10 PPY smoker but I can't find anything online that confirms this. Also 10 packs a year sounds low.
