I'm due to get my nursing degree this May from a college here in upstate New York. My question is...I'm moving back in California soon after our graduation, I'm wondering if hospitals in California hires new graduate nurses??? I plan on taking the NCLEX-RN sometime in July and I'd like to work while preparing for the exam. Does anybody here know where I can apply as a graduate nurse? I'll be going to Lancaster, CA....Please help...Thanks!

I don't know any hospitals in the Landcaster area, but most hospitals will hire you as a new grad (you have to have your interim permit though) and you can work as an IP while studying for NCLEX. You pay an extra $30 when you apply to take the test and it comes in the mail a few weeks after.

Hi, PICURN! thanks for the reply...By the way, what is an IP? Sorry never heard of that before. Since I'm graduating this May, do you think I should start applying now? This is all new to me and I'm a bit nervous about starting my career in nursing. Can you direct me to a place where I can get all this information so that I can prepare myself in advance.

An Interim Permit (IPI is issued by the California Board of Nursing to graduates of approved nursing programs, who have met all requirements for licensure except for taking the NCLEX exam. You have 6 months to take the exam, however, if you take it and do not pass, then you lose your interim permit.

This information is available on the CA BON website. I would begin the application process as quickly as possoble as they may not be that familiar with your nursing program. It usually takes two months or so to get a license from Ca, so I would definitely begin right away.

As to whether or not you will find a position as an interim permitee in your area, that depends on how many new grads that the hospitals have already hired. Interviews are being conducted right now for this summer by any of the hospitals. I would definitely contact some of them now, especially if you want one of the smaller areas of the state.
