Filing Taxes

Does anyone know what we can claim as educational and occupational expenses when filing taxes? I graduated in May and have always claimed my book expenses, but I am wondering if I can claim expenses for ati, NCLEX review, NCLEX testing fee and state licensing fees? Ati and the NCLEX review were mandatory for my school so that is why I am considering claiming these expenses.

You really need to consult with a licensed tax professional as your current employment status and income also affect your ability to claim employment related deductions.

Generally NO, license prep courses and testing fees are not deductible as educational expenses. Especially if this is your "entry to practice"

Licensing fees and malpractice insurance MAY be deductible if you qualify and are presently working in the profession (i.e. if you just graduated and passed the NCLEX but are not working as a nurse you would not be able to deduct the licensing fees)

From the IRS: Publication 529 (2011), Miscellaneous Deductions

Thanks for the info and the link. I worked an immunization clinic for a few months last year after obtaining my RN license and now I'm starting at a hospital this upcoming week. I will definitely get some professional advice like you said, but according to the link it looks like I will be able to claim some of my expenses. Thanks again!
