When I was 18 yrs old (i am 23 now), I got a mistemeanor shoplifting charge. Since it was my first offense the court had it explunged from my records and they said it was gone. I am in ny and about to start nursing school. I was wondering if this is going to affect me getting a license or getting a job. I was wondering if it will show up on my backround check. Has an nurses here have an explunged shoplifting charge and got hired as a RN??? It was my first and only offense and i regret it so badly. I was young and stupid. Please let me know if this will affect me getting my license or a job. Im wondering if the hospitals will even see it. Any nurses who were in this situation and got hired please write back! Hopefully it will ease my mind..just alittle

It is always best to Disclose Disclose Disclose.. Especially on your first jobs. It is much better to explain and ask for forgiveness then get caught trying to cover it up. As the years & jobs go by it may get easier to " accidently forget" to add it to your applications but defineately not as a new grad.

Many of the applications will say: "Have you ever been arrested, cited, deffered judgement, expunged, convicted of anything?" It is hard to get around saying NO to that. Many have traffic tickets let alone a Theft Charge, which is considered an Honesty Crime. The best advice is to be honest!

I have exactly the same charge from when I was 18 and I'll be 23 in a few weeks (just thought that was odd!) and I never had problems getting my license (just some extra paperwork and a personal letter to the Board)... as for becoming employed- I've been employed at two places and both have given me the opportunity to explain what happened. Both hiring managers said something to the effect of "Not to worry, that isn't a charge that causes me to think you'd harm a patient." They also commented that simply being honest on the job application that I do have a misdemeanor gave me "points" with them.

I know we aren't allowed to give legal advice on this website, but I think it's safe to tell you that you could always go to the courthouse and have a background check run on yourself (might cost you a couple bucks, might not). You'll be able to see if anything pops up.

Be careful with the Board of Nursing they have access to everything, just put it on your licensing application and send a letter explaining I don't think you have any problem, if it was expunged, I assume you mean adjourned contemplating dismissal if you stayed out of trouble for a set amount of time, well I don;t know contact a lawyer or the legal aide society they can advise you.

Oh I know I already went through the boards process I thought the question was about getting a job not the boards... I know u have to tell the boards everything but jobs dnt see my record or none that I have had

the board can see EVERYTHING, expunged or not so disclose it. By the time you're done with school you'll be around 25. I imagine that 7 years of a clean record will be fine.
