good morning maryland board!

i am applying to jhu next week for entrance into the program summer 2010. has anyone graduated from this school? are you in the program now? what have you heard about this program? good/bad? any advice would be super helpful as i live in arizona! :)

You should have gone to their open house on September 12th. It was very informative. We got a chance to talk with current students and take a tour of the school. JHU is ranked high as one of the best nursing programs in the nation. They have a 97% pass rate on the NCLEX exam. They are also building some more clinical labs to accomodate more students in the future. I am applying there too, but for Fall 2011. Overall, the presentation was great and I am glad that I attended. It gave me a clear understanding of what is next to come. We also got to speak and hear from the director of financial aid. I would really need a scholarship though because the accelerated program is currently 89,000!

Look closely at the requirements for scholarship also. I would have loved to attend but alas, have a previous undergrad BS from 20 years ago that held my overall GPA under 3.5 (even after retaking A&P I, II, and Micro). Their committee looks at total cumulative GPA for scholarship status, and my grades were not going to make even the minimum cut off. Admission was a little more forgiving b/c they were interested in life experiance, current coursework, et cet...financial aid, nope.

That was a couple years ago, so dig deep before getting yourself emotionally set on JHU. Unless of course you can afford 89K, and then whoo-hoo! Enjoy a beautiful school, respected faculty, and the bustling city of Baltimore!

Thanks for the info! Do you know how much the traditional program would be? I am going to tour the school in November. I wish I could have gone to the info session. I really appreciate any info you could give me!

The traditional program is 51K per year and its a 2 year program with a summer break. Some students said that they use this break as a chance to get a job at the hosptial to gain experience. They explained that the traditional program is the same as the accelerated program, but only that the accelerated program doesnt have breaks. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Have you looked at University of Maryland? Also a good school (check out their NCLEX first time pass rate on the Maryland Board of Nursing website - they beat JHU this year) and tuition is $8500 or so a year. You can attend either the Baltimore or Shady Grove - Rockville campus.
