Im a LPN nursing student and finally after years of denying I had a learning disability, today trying to study for my test I realized that I do have a learning disability.

As a young child I was diagnosed with having a learning disablity in Math, English Comprehesion and Science. Go figure these are the essentials needed in order to be sucessful in nursing. I was in the RN program 2 years ago having trouble and I left. With lots of regrets I blamed it on having to many family issues, which was true, but I didnt want to admit at that time I had a LD which was the primary problem. I decided to enter back into the LPN program hoping to make a fresh start. I built myself confidence and prepared myself for the tough road ahead of me.

But today as I was studying I just dont know what it is I am studying. I started to think nursing isnt for me, but I know it is because its been my life long dream. In a fit of tears I called my mother and she made me realize that I am not stupid, I just process information differently than others. She made me realize I had a DL and to use the services at my college. I called the school today knowing it was a Sunday and left a message asking them for help. I believe if I dont get the help now I will end up dropping out of the nursing program again and believe I will never make a good nurse.

If there are any other nursing students out there who do have a learning disability I would love to hear from you and get some tips on how you were able to suceed through nursing school. I plan on using the services they can offer me at my school to help me get through the next year of nursing school.

I teach LPN at a community college and on campus we have a learning disability program. Example for students who have ADD or ADHD, they can have there test read to them, be given double the time to take an exam, also take the exam in a seperate room that is totally quite. They pay other students to tutor, and take notes for students with disabilities. Look into your school and see what they have to offer. Also there is a program for test anxiety called STAN.. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for being so open about your problems. I know you don't realize it, but it helps others who are too scared or ashamed to admit that they struggle too.

Send me a PM if you want. I was diagnosed with an issue years ago, and have found lots of neat ways to deal with it and turn it into a positive thing for me. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but if you want it, it'll happen! And you obviously do. You're gonna make it!!!

Let me incourage you .The way you build your post tells me that you don't have LD in English Comprehension . I wish i could write the way you do .

Thank you all for the postings. I am going to find out more information this coming Thursday when I go and speak to someone about what type of services they can offer me. I have my first test on Thursday and Im nervous as can be. Im actually trying to study now but you know how that goes, overwhelming.

I should have been a little more specific, its not the english I have problems with, its reading comprehension. I have trouble retaining what I read. My writing skills are great! In fact I do great when it comes to writing papers, that is one strong skill I have developed.

OhDaughterofZion, I would love to hear how you have turned this into a positive situation. I need as much support now as I can get.

GiGiRNICU, I am going to look into that STAN test, I have a lot of anxiety and it seems to take over my life lately.

Thanks everyone, Im glad to know Im not the only one out there with a LD as a nursing student and to know I still can achieve my goal with such a disability. I will keep you posted on how I do on my test and what my school can help me with for services.
