You can be a RN-BSN, RN-ADN (associate degree), or get your RN through a diploma program. The BSN is a Bachelors degree. Some get their ADN and then go on later to get their BSN.

No, you do not have to get your RN first, and then your BSN. In fact, college students get the BSN and then sit for the licensing exam to get the RN. It is just like any other professional school (Law for example) you can go to school and either not take the test or not pass the test. So it is possible to have a BSN and NOT have an RN.

Unless you have access to a staged program that gives your the ADN, allows you to sit for the RN boards and then you continue on for the BSN, it (usually ) takes longer to do it that way. You end up having to retake courses the AD program taught, but not "exactly" how the BSN program wanted it.
