I currently am a teacher. I'm at a point where I'm tired and burnt out. I'm thinking about going into the nursing field, but don't know where to begin. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Sure. What type of Nursing are you interested in? An LPN program? An RN program?

I don't know what area you are in to suggest a school, but there are several good Nursing schools in the state. I am sure if you gave us a few more details, I could try to help you.

The best place to start is online, and find out what is available to you that will suit your needs.

Hi ConsideringNursing07. I would suggest researching the schools in your area on the internet. Then show up in person to request a brochure and application. Find out what is required, such as a physical, hepatitis shots, tuberculosis skin test. Then schedule an appointment with an advisor to find out what prerequisites you will need to take before applying for the nursing program. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking about RN. On the NSU site I saw an Associates Nursing Degree. Seems that this would fit my needs for now since I already have most of the prerequisites. Exactly what's the difference in a 2 year vs. a 4 year degree. Oh and what's the beginning pay rate for new grad. nurses in Shreveport. I know it's more than what teachers make.

I am currently in the Associate's program at NSU. It really seems to be a good program so far. I have finished all of my pre-req's, and am currently in the summer Nur 1050 class. I am so excited to start clinicals.

The only difference between a 2 yr and 4 yr RN is the oppurtunity for advancement. In the first few years it doesn't really matter, but if you are not content being a bedside nurse the rest of your career you will want to complete the Bach. at some point. (You can complete the BSN completely online at NSU if you are a two year RN)

But if you have any specific questions about Northwestern's program, let me know. I think it would be a good option for you if you have a degree already. I am pretty sure some of your stuff will transfer. I will have completed a four year degree in a non-related field next semester, which is why I opted for the 2yr RN.

You might want to consider LSUHSC's accelerated CARE program. Its an 18 month BSN program that is designed for people who already have their bachelor's degree in a non-related field. Since most ADNs are two-year programs anyway, why not go straight to BSN? If you ever wanted to branch out and pursue a master's for better pay or specialize in advanced nursing, it would be the way to go. I'm starting the CARE program in the fall and have already completed all prereqs.
