Hi all!

I have an interview Tuesday for an L&D unit. I have two years of newborn nursery experience. I was told to come in my scrubs and that I should expect to spend around two hours on the unit. Any idea what to expect? I've never had an interview like this before. Also tips for what to read up on, since I can't find my maternity textbook lol. I've been to deliveries (high risk lady partsl and Caesarean) but always as a baby nurse.

This is the first local interview I've gotten since I moved up here so I'm pretty excited!

Well, my L&D interview turned into a mother-baby interview as the managers felt it might be a better fit for me and I was invited to shadow one of the nurses in mother-baby and did so. I was there for almost 4.5 hours, all told! I should hear something next week.

I received and accepted a job offer yesterday and start next month! I'm excited to be working with babies and moms again, I've really missed it!

Thanks! I'm actually a little relieved lol. L&D is an area that I've always been interested in but I am definitely not an adrenaline junkie, and honestly, my end goal is NICU. I wouldn't feel right about taking a position with a 5-6 month orientation not knowing for certain it's something I want to stick with for the long run. I'll get a solid orientation despite my newborn nursery experience and learn how to do things right (which wasn't necessarily the case with my old job...). The hospital has around 250-300 births a month, compared to around 120-150/month at my old hospital. I'll miss going to deliveries but I'll enjoy the couplet care model, and there is a NICU there that I may request transfer into at a later date (they had mentioned I could transfer to L&D after a few months if I wanted so I am sure the NICU will be a possibility as well).

About the unit--I liked the people I met, though I wouldn't be working with them directly as I'll be on nights, and they all had good things to say about night shift (which could always be a front, but I know some places have serious day/night rivalry and experienced some of that on my old unit); I also liked the managers I interviewed with. I liked some of the more up-to-date practices I observed compared to my old workplace as well. It's a very different environment than my old hospital (inner city compared to community hospital) so that will be something of an adjustment. The position is 2-12's a week but I'll be receiving full time orientation for 6 weeks or so. I have heard nothing but good things about this hospital since I moved up here and the position I was offered hadn't even been posted so I am excited they offered it to me! Overall, I'm hoping for a better experience than what I got as a new grad last time around and am optimistic about the possibilities. :)
