How many hours can I expect to be able to work while in school? I'm pre-nursing right now and hoping to get my first CNA job mid summer. Actual nursing classes will start Spring '18 and I'll have all non-nursing classes out of the way, except for one which I'll take during the summer term when there aren't any nursing classes. I'm curious if I am too optimistic to assume I'll be able to handle a 12 hour shift or 2 8 hour shifts. The hospital I want to work for offers tuition reimbursement with a minimum # of hours worked, so I'm hopeful I can handle it!

It depends on the nursing program and you. Some programs are more time consuming than others. Some people have better time management skills. Some people so the parent thing. And so on. The short answer is "maybe."

There is no way that any of us responding can know if YOU can do well in nursing school while working. I will say that I worked 20 h/week during my BSN program. I see MANY of the students in the ADN program where I teach work during the semester. The paradox is that sometimes working at the bedside as a tech or aide actually HELPS students do better in nursing school despite the time that it takes away from book learning.
