Whiskey question

Hello all, I have a few questions.

My husband is active duty army and is switching his MOS to become a medic. He is taking a course here on post for his EMT and was told he will only have to go to Ft Sam Houston for the last half of his AIT (two months or so). His whole goal is to eventually get a m6 identifier (lpn) asap and we were wondering what the chances are of that?

Also, I may go to TX with him for the two months because he will most likely deploy as soon as he gets back home. I understand he will be extremely busy with school and studying and I know the Army prefers no family, but could anyone tell me how often he would have a little freetime, if any? Will he ever be allowed to leave post overnight? We were wondering what the rules would be like for a prior service during the last two months of the school (he's E-4). Any info would be great.

Also, any info on the area surrounding Ft Sam? Decent temporary housing for me? (Since he will spend most time in barracks, I'm sure.) Since I may not get to see him much, I will use the time as an opportunity to sight see and get some much needed sun.

I know there are several threads based upon your specific questions from current and former Whiskey members at FT Sam Houston for this training right now at http://www.military.com under the Army section under the medics.

From what I read they are having many restrictions regarding weekend leave and family so, try to be leary about getting your hopes up.

This won't answer your current questions about the EMT training at Ft Sam Houston, but I figured you might have some if your husband goes to the 68WM6 course (used to be 91WM6/91C course a.k.a. Practical Nurse Course).

The training for Practical Nurse is offered at several sites, 6 currently. Each location is slightly different in operation. The training material is directed by the Academy of Health Science at Ft Sam Houston. However the day to day life is pretty much on the individual site.

At Fort Lewis, Washington (outside of Tacoma) single soldiers were required to live in the barracks. Married soldiers were given the option of applying for post housing or living off post (this was 2001-2005).

School was typically from 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM M-F. There were exceptions to this where students would have to do an evening shift when in clinicals. However off-duty time was theirs with the exception of scheduled duties.

The training is currently 52 weeks for the Practical Nurse course, broken into 3 phases. Phase I is at Fort Sam Houston, TX and is an introductory course. Upon successful completion, the student then goes to a phase II site. Phase III is at the same location.

Upon successful completion the individual then moves to a permanent duty station. Passing the NCLEX is REQUIRED to complete the course.
