When did you realize Psych nursing was for you?

I am just beginning a BSN program and have always had an interest in psychology and I'm thinking about specializing in at as a nurse. I am curious how each of you realized or decided to become mental health nurses? And did you enjoy your clinical rotations in psych during nursing school?

Thanks,

J

My mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was 4 years old. I always knew I would end up in a helping profession of some kind, and naturally, psychology was always interesting to me. I was horrified by the way my mother was treated when she was finally institutionalized (this was in the late 70's early 80's when I was a young kid), and I guess I feel like I can somehow make a difference. Who knows, ask me again after I graduate and my first year on the job.....:)
