What is the appropriate time to inquire

Hello. Just wondering what is considered ample time to contact a potential employer after an interview? I sometimes within a day or two follow-up with short email stating, "thanking them for the time and consideration, hope to hear from you you". However, when you are interviewed and they said they will contact you in a couple days...and a couple days turns into a week or more, I just feel that if they want you or not they should contact you within 3-5 working days to inform you either way. Thanks!
