USAF...The Impossible (for me)

Hi all,

I am (was) an overweight T2 non-insulin dependent diabetic. My hyperglycemia is all but gone d/t my drastic change in diet and weight loss.

This stated, in 2 years I'll be finished w/my BSN (currently an LPN) and will be 32 when I'm done. Per your experience/wisdom/knowledge Is there any possibility at all of me being accepted for officer training?

I've been dealing w/some difficult personal things and my brother is active duty enlisted USAF and a couple weeks ago he asked me why I didn't think about trying to get into USAF after I'm done w/school. I told him it was impossible due to my dx and he said that wasn't true.

To be honest, my faith is the centrality of my life, and I've prayed about this a lot as my brother got my hopes up and I dont' want to pursue the impossible/something that isn 't what God has planned for my life. And the more I pray, the more I'm compelled to pursue it.

Thoughts?

Hi,

I took a look around for you and I'm finding conflicting results. One site that lists the disqualifying conditions indicates that current or history of diabetes mellitus (not specified 1 or 2, so assuming they mean both) is disqualifying. On the other hand, I keep finding people who have DM 2 that are in the military. It's hard to tell if they were diagnosed with DM 2 while they were in service or if they were admitted into the service with the condition, but either way, it looks like there are some limitations on where folks with DM 2 can serve.

There's an AMEDD recruiter on the boards--SFC Jiminez. https://allnurses.com/members/466151/ See if s/he has any ideas for you.

It is doubtful right now that any of the military branches would waive DM. There are lots of people with DM in the military, but they all developed it after they were in the military and d/t their jobs/rank etc. weren't medically discharged.
