UIC's MSN program - Fall 2013

So I emailed the UIC CON with some questions and here is what I got back:

1) How many students are accepted every year?

The number of applicants for the MS and for different specialties varies from year-to-year. We admit approximately 20 students to each specialty.

2) What is the admissions committee looking for/interested in? What will make my application stronger?

The admissions committee is looking for candidates with a good understanding of the specialty role. While work experience is not

required, it is very helpful in showing to us your understanding of the Acute Care NP role.

3) What is the average GPA (of last 60 credits) of accepted students?

For second degree nursing students, is the GPA of the FIRST degree the only one that is looked at?

The average GPA varies from year to year, but most applicants have above the 3.0 minimum GPA requirement. The GPA is calculated on the last 60 hours of your nursing degree.

4) What is the fastest possible time that the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP program can be completed in if the maximum number of credits was taken every semester?

We have two, three, and four year tracks for the MS. The fastest you could complete is two years (which would require attendance over the summer).

So I've been trying to do some research on UIC's MSN program and I haven't come across much, I keep finding posts about the GEP program. I will be applying to the Adult Acute Care NP program that starts in Fall 2013. I was just wondering who else is applying, what your stats are, what you know (how many people are accepted, what UIC is looking for in an applicant, etc).

I know that UIC looks at the last 60 credits of your first bachelors degree, which is definitely a plus! Does anyone know of any other MSN programs that look at only the last 60 credits?

What are my chances of being accepted?

GPA from last 60 credits of first bachelors degree: around 3.3 (not the greatest)

GPA from nursing degree: currently around 3.64

GRE score: Verbal reasoning-530, Quantitative reasoning-650, Analytical writing-4.0

I have over 4 years of experience as a nursing assistant/CNA...currently working in the ER as a tech. I have worked as a medical assistant as well. I have also gone on a medical mission trip abroad (I know UIC is big on global health so maybe this will be a plus) and have a lot volunteer experience.

I will have no problem getting great references. I have worked with a lot of nurse practitioners that wouldn't mind writing a reference for me.

I have applied to the BSN-DNP program and I have 6 years of nursing experience. Mainly in ICU/Tele and now I am in infectious disease. My last 60 credits of my BSN is 3.46 which is mediocre. I didn't take the GRE since I didn't need it with my GPA. My question to you is, are you already an RN? You mentioned you work as an ER tech, so will you apply to the GEP program?
