Any of you ever worked in the ER at University of California San Diego??? I'm thinking about going there for my next travel assignment- any feedback anyone can provide would be great- especially what their patient ratios are in the ER & how the regular staff treats travelers.... Thanks!

Okay, let me start by saying that I personally have not worked at UCSD. But, I did get to work at Rady Children's and Sharp (both in the ED). UCSD gets a lot of trauma, it is a major teaching hospital, and always busy. Granted all of this information is second hand, so you have to take that into consideration. Actually San Diego is such a great place, so no matter where you work, you will have a great time. Just be prepared to work hard at UCSD, but you will be in a great city to play hard as well. In fact, after I finish my assignment in Orange County, I am wanting to go back to San Diego. Good luck!

Hi! I used to work at UCSD as a traveler, although I haven't worked in the ED I have several friends who have. So basically the big "downer" for ER nurses is how UCSD handles trauma patients. Trauma Patients are taken by EMS directly to the Surgical ICU trauma bay and bypass the ER completely, they are cared for by the Surgical ICU staff from the immediate resisitation to post-op. As a traveler they would most likely do what most hospitals due and use you in there short-stay overnight unit of the ED, patients who are in need of observation or who are unsure of a true admission to a floor. Hope this helps!
