Thank you

He was a WW II vet who volunteered for the US Army in hopes that his children would never have to see war. You see, he was a farmer and didn't have to go for that reason.

He was in the first infantry division, also known as the Big Red One. He saw the second wave of D-day and he made it through the battle of the bulge. When it was all over he went on to the Nuremberg trials.

I never saw him cry until he lost his bride of 67 years 7 years ago. They were a lonely 7 years, to say the least but he kept on going. Humble as ever, the sweetest man you ever saw. His once large 6 foot frame was now about 5,6 and much smaller from arthritis, osteoporosis and broken vertebra in his back, but he kept getting up every day. He never stopped, just slowed down.

He never lost his mind, he was sharp as a tack. Funny, too. A very humble, sweet man who lived alone at the age of 93.

Last week he fell in his kitchen and was taken to your ER, where he died less than an hour after arriving, alone without any family by his side. Likely the way he wanted it, knowing him. We don't know many details other than it was rather fast, what few details I do know are sad and scary.

I don't know who you are, but you were with him, I am told. I hope you held his hand and I hope he wasn't scared. I'm sure that you did.

Thank you, Nurse who I will never meet, for being there with my Papa when none of us could be. You'll never know the gratitude I have for you. This man was adored by all who knew him and I wish that you could have known him, too.

Oh my gosh this just made me cry. He sounded like he was a great man.

He really, really was. If you needed it and he had it to give you, it was yours. Most people wouldn't experience one of the things he did in his lifetime, and he never mentioned or bragged about any of them. I miss him, but I'll be forever grateful he never had to lose his dignity or humility. I never thought he would die in an ER, but I'm glad it was fast and I am told he had several nurses fretting over him and keeping him comfy :)

What a lovely letter. He was undoubtedly a wonderful man. One of our greatest generation and I know he is missed and very much loved.
