Tax Deductions

Published

I was a new Traveller in 2007 and am attempting to do my own tax return. I have read most of the IRS publications but am uncertain about a few topics. I do have a permanent tax residence and have all of the legal documentation required. When you receive a housing stipend or a meal stipend, are those considered reimbursements or can you claim them as deductions?

Also, how do you deduct your computer, internet and cell phone? All I can find is depreciation information. If there is anyone out there that is willing to share tax information with me, I would be obliged. :bowingpur

A VERY good resource for traverlers tax issues is http://www.traveltax.com/

He is a former RT traveler and has an accounting degree/tax business.

He also does seminars around the USA.

I found a link to his web site on Highwayhypodermics.com which is another really good web site for travelers!!!

Hope this helps:D

I dont really reccommend doing your taxes alone. I do mine, but I do not itemize orattemp tto deduct my computer etc.

Your housing and incidentals are not deductions, they were already tax free. That much I know.

Love to dive...yes I have seen that website and it IS very informative but you can't get answers unless you sign up. It is a very good resource though based on the questionnaire that it provides.

KatieBell.....I was pretty sure about the tax free housing issue. I did not receive a meal stipend on my first assignment, so I am sure that I can have a daily deduction for that. And, I also figure that the travel reimbursement is covered unless your expenses are up and above what the reimbursement was. I had to drive 2500 from my permanent tax home to my temp assignment and my company only reimbursed me for 1 night in a hotel so I believe that I can claim the other hotel expense. Turbo Tax is such a good resource for walking you through all of the issues and I have done my tax returns in the past even with itemizing deductions. I guess I just want some information from other travellers who have had to learn and can give me some pearls of wisdom. I certainly do appreciate the info!
