Studying for GRE

Published

Hello,

i recently graduated and got my RN-BSN last year in May. I wanted to get a head start on getting my masters, I am looking into doing the FNP-MSN program. I want to start studying for my GRE, and I want to get a good score on it to compensate for my GPA which isn't so high (it is at least a 3.0 though).

I just wanted to know what is the best way to study for the GRE, and if there are any books, or classes that you would recommend to help study and prepare for it. Any input/advice would be great. Thank you!

I used the Kaplan book to prepare (with the CD and online access code). I got it off amazon for 25 bucks I think. I found it very helpful. I think I tried to take 1 full test each weekend for about a month or two leading up to the test (minus the essays), and I tried to practice each section or study vocab (or the "roots") for at least a few hours during the week. The most important part is becoming familiar with the layout of the test and the types of questions that are asked. Also, learning to pace yourself and know what question number you should be at with certain time points. I never thought the class would be worth it for me. They are supremely overpriced, and the majority of the information you receive in the class, you can read about in the book. Granted, you probably get more practice in with the class, but if you are worried about not getting to do enough practice tests, you should just buy another book. That's my 2 cents anyway!

Now that I have typed this all out, I just remembered that they changed the format of the test a month after I took it... I don't know if that makes a difference, but I just thought of it.

Thank you blackbird! That is really helpful information. I wanted to start studying for it now, but I probably won't take the exam until later in the fall, I know I will start studying more before I take it, but I would like to get familiar with the exam first.
