too soon to be charge?!?!?!?

Hello - I am a new grad on a med/surg floor (mostly post surgical). There are 7 of us that are new grads and we all work nights. The manager is looking to have us take over and work the night shift alone. The most experience on the floor out of all of us is 6 months (another girl and I). Others are 4 months on the floor.

This is scary to me. Many times I have 7-8 patients. I rarely have time to stop for a break in during the night. I am not sure I will be able to juggle charge and my normal workload. Plus I am scared about the lack of experience on the floor. Am I being a big baby?

Thanks!

Nope -- trust your instincts. It's your license, so don't agree to anything that you don't feel you can safely do.

At least half of the nurses working any shift should have 2 or more years experience on that unit.

I advise new grads and nurses returning to practice to ask about the ratio of experienced to inexperienced nurses on each shift, and RUN away from any unit or shift that doesn't have at least 50% experienced staff.

You make a great point....I never thought about such an issue before.

I dont think you are being a big baby...I would not want to have that work load, being fairly new and no one more experienced on the floor...yikes! Makes me scared of the things I possibly have to look forward to after NS. Hope all works out well for you.
