So confused!

Hi..I am a wife and mother of three beautiful children. I am currently a CNA working in a nursing home. My dream is to become an RN but I dont even know where to begin. What are my options? Ive heard of a fast track program but what is it and what do I need to do to even get started? If anyone can help please do! Thank you!:heartbeat

Okay, I am not sure where you live, but I will tell you from my experience. I currently work in a hospital as an ER tech, but I am a certified CNA. The fast track as I know it, is usually from already licensed LPN's. They are on the fast track because they already have a year completed. If I was you, I would look into your local schools and see what the require for pre-req's and begin with those. They will usually include a bio or chem maybe an english. Begin taking your pre-req's and any entrance exams. Keep your grades high! Do any apllicable entrance test. Be prepared...its a long an rewarding journey. :)

I don't know anything about fast track programs unless you are already an LPN (licensed practical nurse), so if you are looking for a shorter amount of time for a similar career, get into an LPN program. That way you can start working as a nurse earlier and then work towards your RN with maybe another year of study. I don't know, that process seems longer and more confusing actually... I would just recommend a 2-year associate degree RN program which involves a year or two prior for prerequisite work. I know lots of moms with families that go through nursing school. It is a challenge, but if your family is supportive and you are determined, than it is definitely possible! I wouldn't recommend full time work on the side though...

EDIT: But if you do plan on continuing to work in a nursing home, I know many nursing homes hire LPNs at the same rate as RNs, so just becoming an LPN may be a shorter and better option.

I used to work as a CNA also. My advice is to get those pre-reqs done with! I don't know if this is universal but it would be best to take your Eng required classes, anatomy & physiology, a chem class or biology (some schools require biology before micro and a&p), statistics, pathophysiology, microbiology, and maybe nutrition at least. These seem to be the courses I have seen as far as pre-reqs go. As for a "fast and easy" track to being a nurse there really isn't any as far as I can tell. It can be done! Just take your classes sensibly- meaning don't load up ( like I'm doing...momma mia! :o ) and make sure you have a little time for family life and yourself! Once you get done with a course you can smile and know that you have one class less to take for your goal! Best of luck to you :)
