Hi everyone! I'm in a bit of a situation and I was hoping for some advice/tips/wisdom, literally ANYTHING that can help me.
I took all my prerequisites at a State college almost 2 years ago. I didn't realize how important it was to get A's on these classes, especially the GPA's required for the science courses. I got C's on Micro, A&P1, and A&P2. Obviously, that doesn't amount to an acceptable GPA in almost ANY nursing programs due to my science GPA alone.
I'm not here for judgment or pity, I know I should've done better, and I also know that I can do better. I had never even gotten a C ever in my life until Micro and the reason why all that downfall happened is just a story I don't even want to get into.
Anyways, I still want to pursue nursing. I currently work as a CNA and it's only made me realize just how much more I want to become a nurse. I've come across some questionable nurses (or even just nurses who are questionable people) and it honestly convinces me that if they can do it, so can I.
I have been out of school for the past 2 years just feeling stuck, not knowing what to do. I haven't even attempted to apply anywhere because I know I don't qualify. I just don't even know where to continue from here. I genuinely WANT to redo these science courses because I WANT a good foundation. However, I live in California (I'm not sure how other states are) and majority, if not all, programs here only accept 1 science course retake and it just makes me question my odds because mathematically, even if I got an A in my 1 retake, it's still not enough either way.
I know there's a good chance I will have to go the Private route and if that's what it takes, I'll do it. I do still want to take a chance at possible LVN programs out there too though, however I live in SoCal, so I'm looking for what's in my area.
So with that, does anyone know of any LVN programs that might not require science prerequisites because it's included in the program? Does anyone know of a good private school that will include the science courses so I can retake them all and have that foundation that won't cost me an arm and a leg?
Also, if anyone knows of any good online Anatomy & Physiology courses I can take on the side for my own learning benefit, I'd love to hear about those too. Or if anyone knows of online videos that will teach me the sciences. I'm even willing to listen to podcasts. I just want every bit of information as possible, class or not. I want the knowledge I need to become a great nurse one day.
Thanks in advance!

Honestly, California is a very difficult state to be admitted to nursing programs (ADN/BSN), unless you have very good grades. The private schools will take you, but you'll pay a lot of money. I'm not sure of each school's retake policy, you'd have to contact them individually. Private schools aren't as picky though from what I've seen.
If you still have Pell Grant eligibility and can take out loans, private schools may be an option. Just ensure that they are accredited. Once you obtain admission you can apply to programs such as HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) through either the VA or Military and if you're accepted they will pay for your education in exchange for you working for them after you graduate and become an RN.
I took my prerequisites at Barton Community College. They offer all of the prerequisites online. I took A&P I and II, and Microbiology in the Summer in accelerated sessions. I had a great experience with them.

I know, trust me, I’ve considered a lot of different options and schools. At this point I’m really leaning towards private school and just dealing with the loans. I’m pretty good with financial management so I’m sure I can pay it back properly in the future. I just really want to become a nurse, I will do what it takes. I will definitely be looking into what you’ve shared with me. Thank you so much for the suggestions and input!

I'd call the school you're looking to apply to and ask. Given that we have had COVID impact classes and a majority had gone to completely online, they should be accepted. Mine were accepted by the community colleges I was applying to. The classes from Barton are regionally accredited so there should be no issue unless the school is strictly against online labs.
