You do not have to be a nurse to be a coder. Although I believe it would be easier for a nurse to be a coder than a lay person without medical experience. Coding is very tedious work and often stressful as the hospital will come down on you for missed reimbursement or wrong coding resulting in penalties. However if you are looking to get off the floor and don't mind paperwork this is definitely an area to look into. Many places have medical coding courses and there are some online as well. Most places that hire nurses as coders want experience in coding or a graduation certificate from a coding class.
