I graduated with my associates degree in 2000 and passed the NCLEX exam, was a registered nurse (in a different state than where I now live) and then quit..it's been eight years. Would I need more than just a refresher course? Thanks in advance

Is your license still active in your previous state? Have you contacted the board of nursing in your new state to find out what you need to do to become licensed there?
I went back to nursing after being out for 8 years, but I had several years of experience before quitting my job to stay home with my children, and I kept my license active.
I took a refresher course, and then found a job on a med surg floor where they were willing to give me a month's orientation (longer if I needed it.) It worked out very well.
What kind of nursing do you want to do?

Yes...I think you will need a refresher course - most employers look for that and it would help you get a job.
I was previously licensed in Colorado but I live in Hawaii now..I let my license lapse..was almost positive I would not go back. Was a new grad, very unsure of myself, and very depressed at the time. Eight years later, honestly I don't know if I would walk right back into a world that I left ..I'm willing to try it. I sent at email to Hawaii board last night to just start checking into what would be necessary..do we take the NCLEX exam again? None of that bothers me at all..my concern is going back into a job/career that was very stressful ..but maybe I need to focus on doing something different within nursing. Before, I worked in nursing homes , hospice, and part time for a registry. I know for sure I do not want to work in a hospital or nursing home setting again..thanks for the help..I know only another nurse understands
ps I've also been interested in midwifery for as long as I've been interested in nursing..there is a possibility of training with a midwife where I live.
