Returning to the PICU...

Hello all! I am returning to the PICU very soon (hopefully...my interview is Friday). I am so nervous after being away from the bedside for almost 5 years and only one year of experience in PCICU prior to that. The only clinical experience I have had over the last 4+ years has been a brief stent in med/surg PRN and PRN hospice for a year. Any words of wisdom from the experienced PICU nurses out there? I have been cramming my brain with as much as I can so I will be more prepared. Has a lot changed over the last few years? What would you say are some of the most important clinical skills to brush up on? Any help would be most appreciated. I know I will take a pay cut, but, my passion is people and just want to get back to patient care and feel like I am making a difference again.

Dear Kaewing2003,

Wish you a very successful working journey in PICU.The most important advise is be confident and focus in your interview and do not be nervouse. Then read about most common PICU's cases and its management. Be familiar with type of ventilator they are using and its indication. They may give you a scenarios of medical or post surgical case admitted in PICU and ask you about nursing plan, time management and how to prioritise your work.moreover, read about patient safety and how to maintain it. Wish you all the best.

Thank you for your response. I actually ended up interviewing for PICU and NICU and was offered the NICU position. I accepted and I am so excited about returning to patient care. I am brushing up on all my clinical skills and the equipment that I will be using. Thanks again for all your advise.
