OK .. I have been wondering about this for a long long time..... Do any of you CRNA personally work in pain management centers?......(I hope I am saying this correctly).. Do you guys know of any CRNA's that run their own pain managment centers like doctors (MDA's) do? If so, how much do you think they earn annually and determines this? (all of your help will be greatly appreciated.. for I have searched this internet high and low without any answers!)

In order to do pain managment do you have to do a fellowship like (FAAPM) The American Academy of Pain Management ...etc.?

When you guys seek additional training lets say to do eye....plastics ...etc.. is that included with school or do you guys have to do fellowships/additional training?

Finally, what are extemely hard cases that aren't usually given to CRNA's that you would not mind discussing? Are CRNA's properly trained to take on these cases.. or are the MDA's just simply don't want a CRNA attempting these cases because they don't feel you are competent enough?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks.. (sorry for any misspelled words!!)

Nurse anesthesia does not presently have a formal pain fellowship, although ones are being developed. There are CRNAs already specializing in pain management. You are not an employee when you work in this capacity. You are running your own business, or in partnership with someone. So your income is completely dependent on how hard you work, the contracts you can negotiate, how you set up your practice, etc.

There are no specialty fellowships in nurse anesthesia. Our basic education includes all the other specialties you mention. CRNAs education prepares them to administer any type of anesthetic and manage any type of case. If you personally observe an anesthesia practice where certian cases are not done by CRNAs, those decisions are being made based on criteria other than competency. One possible explanation would be reimbursement, although maybe there are other reasons.
