Questions about nursing school program at CCAC

Published

I'm planning on going to CCAC for nursing. I was wondering if anyone had key insight into what the program is like, any tips, and about how hard it is to get in. I also saw that CCAC didn't have a Med Surg class and I was wondering if it was taught under a different name. I have big dreams of getting to become a emergency nurse and maybe more and I just want to be prepared. Thank you.

Hello! I think it varies a little depending upon which campus you're accepted into. At Boyce, the NUR130 course was pretty much our med-surg nursing, but I believe it was called something else. We also had a med-surg components in some of the later courses (220 which is considered mental health). Admission into the program is very competitive. They just implemented the teas testing and I believe your overall GPA and classes you have completed weigh in as well. Very fast paced and you begin clinical rotations as soon as you begin the program. Hope that helps!

How competitive is it? And is that all that factors in? I just want to cover all areas so I have a clear idea of what to do and improve on.

As far as I know, those are the only factors they consider initially. When I started the requirements were different. Your overall GPA was considered and you received "bonus points" added to you gpa for all of the science classes you already completed. To explain the process a little further, you received x amount of points for getting an A in a class and a lesser amount for receiving a B. This process ultimately boosted the applicant's gpa and those with the highest overall got in (very confusing I know). As I said earlier, teas testing was just implemented. I'm not very familiar with that particular test and not 100% sure if they still do the whole adding points to your gpa. I'm assuming those with the highest scores from the teas will be accepted. I would just go in and do your best! Finding a practice book at the library and seeing which areas you need to improve on wouldn't hurt. As with many other programs many individuals are interested in being accepted into the program so be sure to keep that in mind, but don't let I discourage you.

Was it a worthwhile nursing school? Like, was it challenging and were things covered in depth?

It was definitely challenging. Most instructors covered as much material as possible in class, but you will definitely be doing a lot of reading and studying outside of class. There is a lot of material that needs to be covered and limited time to cover it, but overall I think it was a great program.

Did they go over pharmacology? I didn't see that on the curriculum and I didn't know if I needed to take the pharmacology class by itself or not worry about it.

Yes, there's a pharmacology class. It's taken second semester with the med-surg class.

Do you remember any names of any of the books you used?
