Question about Hurst content.

I'm trying to decide between Kaplan and Hurst.

Kaplan came to the school, and basically said thay they empasize 'test taking' skills rather than content.

I feel pretty good about "how" to take the test, but less sure about content.

Can anyone tell me about the content of the Hurst. Is it test taking or is it content review?

thanks, (only "slightly" freaking out new grad)

Hi There! I am actually currently taking both. I was lucky enough to get a scholarship for Kaplan, and my employer is willing to pay for another review for me, so I picked the Hurst review also :) . Hurst is mostly content, and then she also goes about test taking strategies. When you sign up for the hurst review online, you can call them and they will send you an additional thick packet of info, mostly delegation, priority and triage test taking tips. Her content review is very engaging, not a dull moment. If you do the online version, you can print out handouts to take notes on as she goes along. I would say that 80% of Hurst is content review. I highly recommend it.

hope that helps!

thank you for the information.

would you reccommend the online or the live review?

I didn't have the option for the live review out here in California. You can do a search though on this board to see if anyone has anything to say about the live review. I am 100% satisfied with the online review. Marlene is a crack-up!

Hmmm...

I'm a little wary about doing anything online as I have a crappy dial-up connection and am worried about the video aspects of that. But it would save me 3 hours of driving each day for the live review.

Maybe I'll call/contact them to see how the online course works.

May I ask, when you did the online course did you give yourself a schedule to do it? Another concern is that I'll get 'distracted' is I'm trying to do it at home--I may have a hard time sticking to a plan.

I did give myself a schedule based on the lessons. It is easy to get lazy at home and get distracted, etc. (I know this firsthand!) I guess the only piece of advice I can offer you is to just make a schedule and discipline yourself to stay on the schedule. Give yourself breaks, etc. Actually, in Marlene's online review, she does tell you to take a quick break all the time. For me, I think I just scare myself into studying. I really need to be back there working and getting regular paychecks. If I flunk the NCLEX, I don't have a job, so I try to put about 5 hours of studying in a day.

I took the Hurst Review at my school and we used the Video review. It comes with supplemental materials - notes, a CD, Video with explainations for practice questions and "mock nclex" that is also included. I haven't taken the NCLEX yet, but my school requires us to take an exit exam (HESI) and I made a 1240/1400 (our school requires an 875 to pass). HESI promises that if students make the 875 then most will pass boards. Our program had a 100% pass rate on boards last year so I guess it is working. Our school has used the HURST review every year. During the HESI, which is a computerized test just like the NCLEX, I could HEAR MARLENE HURST talking to me in my head and telling me the right answers (e.i. I could hear parts of her lecture). It's a great review for both audio and visual learners. As for the Kaplan, I cannot say, and can't say for the online review either, since I haven't used them. Good luck.

I took the live review and LOVED it. It helped me refresh on a lot of things. I highly recommend taking it. You'll have a great time too. It's fun.
