I am located in Glassboro, New Jersey. One of my coworkers was explaining to me that there are "step up" programs but I have never heard of them. I am trying to find a program!

Step up from CNA to LPN...help!
I am looking to become an LPN but was wondering what is the best route to take. I heard that they have step up programs from CNA to LPN and they are shorter, instead of taking a regular LPN program. Has anyone done a step up program? What should I do?

Am I doing the wrong thing?
No way are you doing the wrong thing! The same thing happened to me. My resident was running low on briefs so we called the family to state that he needed more and they complained that he is going through them too fast and hes going to start counting AND he thought we were using them on other residents. It made me SO angry because you cant predict how much a person is going to go to the bathroom in one day ESPECIALLY if they are on Miralax!! Im just in shock that you were told to leave your resident soaking wet because that is technically considered neglect. I will never understand. Hope everything works out for you :)

Is it awkward bathing, dressing and wiping patients?
I felt the same way when I first became a CNA but honestly it seems like it would be awkward but it is not. Your clinicals while you are in your class will help you ALOT. They let you do care on the patient, I found it awkward with someone watching me but when I got a job I got my own swing of doing things and its so much easier. Just get to know your residents and find out the way they like things done. When I first started I asked for tips on each resident and how the other girls handled them. If your heart is in your job then it will definitely not be awkward. I love my residents and I would take a bullet for them, If you are not just there for the paycheck then you will actually really enjoy it. You develop great bonds with people since you are doing such personal care for them. Just a quick tip, try to work at an Assisted Living facility! Good Luck :)

CNA's: Please Read
As a CNA you can work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift. The times of the shifts all depend on the facility that you are working at. The facility I work at it can be 6-2, 2-10, and 10-6. I am full time so I work 5 days a week and every other weekend. CNA class is VERY easy and common sense. It is really boring because the classes are so long but it flew by. Just make sure you practice your skills because that is the biggest part of the test, the state written test was a piece of cake! As for being strong, yeah you definitely need to be able to support someone but honestly most of the muscle you use is in your legs but as you work you definitely become stronger! I personally love my job. I was born to be in the nursing field and I LOVE my residents so much. It is such an amazing and rewarding job. Class is very specific but you pick up your own ways of doing things and work becomes a breeze. The biggest thing about being a CNA is just get to know your residents!!! GOODLUCK IN EVERYTHING YOU DO AND HAPPY NEW YEAR :)

CNAs, do you like your job?
i love my job as a CNA! Knowing that i am changing my residents life by helping them perform their adl's makes my day. When a resident thanks you or tells you that they love you is the most rewarding thing in this world. My residents bring joy into my day. I love walking into work and having them calling my name and coming to give me a hug or grab my hand and tell me that they are so happy i am working today. They seem like my family members now and i love them so much. When im not at work im constantly thinking about them and hoping nothing has happened. Even though i am in school to become an RN, i still love the one on one interaction with the patients. If youre in the CNA field just to get a paycheck and dont actually have the heart to care for them, its just so sad, ive seen it too many times. Honestly cant wait to get to work later just to see my residents!

Just got certified! What's next?
I just passsed my state test on August 26th and found a job on August 27th! it all depends on where you are looking and how you approach it. Personally, i like to apply in person because they get the chance to meet you and remember you but when you apply online you are just another number/application. It shows more dedication if you actually go to the facility. It doesnt hurt to read up about the facility before going and applying. As a new cna with no experience, i would say to apply for assisted living places rather than a nursing home. Some nursing homes require a year experience. Also, try to find a place that is private and not state! i hope that helped! just be determined and you will find what youre looking for!

Combative resident, help!!
I am a brand new CNA and i just got a job at an assisted living facility, most of the patients are completely independent and just need reminding about showering and meal times. We only really have about 5 people that we have to completely care for and im definitely not complaining about that. I am so content with my job and i love all my residents!! I have only been working here for 4 days now and we have one resident with dementia that will not let you change, dress, or shower her without the biggest battle ever!! She walks around in just a brief and a shirt sometimes because we physically cant get clothes on her. When trying to change, dress, or shower her she will kick, punch, and bite. The other night i showered her for the first time and when i was drying her she was calling me a son of a b*itch and pushing/throwing me against the wall and punching my back with both fists. Also, two days ago i went to put one of my residents in bed and i found her laying in his bed so i called another cna to come help me and even though there were 2 of us holding her arms back and walking her to her room she still managed to hurt us. My legs are covered in bruises from her kicking me. The scary part is that the other CNA's told me that what i saw was her being good and that it wasnt even her at her worst! I really need some advice on how to handle a resident like this! i am literally so scared to go in her room every day! thank you!

Becoming a CNA and need some advice!!
I am 20 years old and a Pre-nursing student. This summer I am taking my CNA course to be certified by July. I don't make a lot of money since I am still in school and I get no help from my parents. My 5 week CNA course is $1060 and I still have to pay to get all of my vaccinations done and buy my scrubs and shoes. Would it make sense to take out a student loan at Wells Fargo to pay for classes and I make payments on the loan. I AM FREAKING OUT AND SO STRESSED. I need some advice!!! I am SO excited to become a CNA and i just want to figure this out ASAP! Thank you!
